Building our Field Fence

The challenges of fencing a 15-acre property with a 100-yard long driveway

3/31/2020

Our first project! We're installing a 600' fence along the front of the property to keep the dogs away from the road. Getting the post holes dug and 4x4 posts cut. This ground is full of lava rock and juniper roots, making the drilling difficult.

We just about completed our new fence this weekend. Adding the 2x4 frames on each section is all that remains. We constructed it from a combination of 4x4 posts (sunk in concrete) and t-posts in the rockier areas. For our double swing gate, we used cedar 1x6 boards and a wire remesh. We love the simple look and design!

We're using 4x4 treated lumber posts for the first 150' on each side of the driveway, for a more decorative and sturdy fence section. This will be the most visible part of the fence, so we wanted it to be attractive.

The remaining 300' of fence will be with T-Posts and metal field fence. Our ground is full of lava rock and Juniper tree roots about 6" below the surface. Digging the post holes required a two-man auger, post hole digger, shovel and pickaxe. It was not an easy task as we quickly found out. We were able to sink each 4x4 post approximately 18"-24" deep. We added 2" of gravel at the base, compacted and used fast setting concrete to secure.
